Kmart #7065

November's glimpse of a Kmart store within the blog's coverage area is the store that serves both the town of Horseheads and the city of  Elmira, NY. While I can't confirm this, this store was very likely something prior to becoming Kmart. I want to say Grants because of the store's lighting, but nothing else really points to this being the case. There is no evidence of a former Grants restaurant here and at most former larger Grants stores turned Kmart there is.

The Garden Shop was definitely added on at a later date.
I actually managed to stop by this store one time during night hours.
As you can see, this store has a fairly normal store layout.
Interesting to see the lack of a yellow line under the 'Big,' making for another logo variant. Also, notice the blue tape covering over outdated information. Not really surprising.

Old Olan Mills.

The former cafe has actually been walled off here! Any other Kmart just puts up the infamous curtain wall. Must mean this store's restaurant had been closed much longer than others.
A peek through the rather dirty stockroom window door.

One lone brand name signage remains on the wall.

I spy a Sears mat in use.

Closed due to it being winter at the time this picture was taken.

Former pharmacy.

Some of the more recent updates:

The updated pantry.
Appliances moved to electronics.
Rating: 7 out of 10.
Even though this store no longer operates any specialty department (pharmacy/cafe), it still manages to capture enough customers to support itself. The fact that both former spaces have been walled off rather than putting a curtain up gains points as it creates less suspicion of something being there prior. The biggest negative which makes me drop a point for this store is the floors. Some of the floors in this store are in really bad shape and look horrible.

In Danger of Closing?
This store has great visibility right off I-86, especially to eastward traffic and has a rather convenient exit for it via Exit 53. It is also closer to Elmira (where most of the population is for this area) than the other two competitors it faces. From a practical standpoint, it wouldn't make sense to close this location unless it is unprofitable.

  1. Looks like a rather well-kept store! I especially like the exterior. Plus the Big Kmart logo on the directory without the swoosh is a cool find too.

    1. Yes, this store overall felt like a store cared for. Indeed!

  2. Store opened (as Kmart) in August 1975 from what I could dig up so it probably was a Grant City. Possible Kmart removed any trace of a former restaurant at some point.

    1. Seems like it would of been a former Grant City then. Still not confirmed, so I won't adjust the post, but I appreciate you looking into it!

Yes, Kmart actually did remove traces of both a pharmacy and restaurant here.
