Kmart #7676

NOTE: This Kmart location is outside the blog's coverage area in Sidney, NY.

While this store is just outside of my county boundary, this store was well worth capturing as it is the closest store to me to have recived the remodel decor package of 2007/2008. Sadly, many of the stores that did get this remodel have now closed as you have probably noticed. It's honestly a shame that those closed stores couldn't have transferred their decor to other stores that were still going strong, even if this decor is no longer the current style. This package is so much better than the '90s style found at most of Kmart's stores today and often getting newer signage is all the store may need.

Anyways, at least this Kmart is still going strong with this decor....

OR IS IT?

(Did I fool you?) The picture before the break is Sidney's original Kmart which still sits abandoned since Kmart relocated to its newer '90s style location. So, yes, this store is still going strong.

One odd thing about this store is how Little Caesars still has its 'pizza station' tagline. Almost all Kmart locations went on an updating spree and dropped pizza station "as it was outdated."
Another trait of the 2007/2008 remodels was adding either a walk-up pharmacy (as is the case here) or a drive-thru pharmacy.
Time for an inside look:
Carts are now located where Customer Services would have been previously.

This sign would be gone at any other Kmart Little Caesars

Starting with the left side of the store:

Very organized appliances department!

Aisle Sign for the Grocery/Pet/Cleaning Supplies

Wasting no space by having the former PENSKE auto center be a SEARS auto center.

This actually has belt-driven checkouts. Most likely added during the remodel.

For some reason, what little ice cream products this store sells is at the front of the store.

And one last thing:

Little Caesars (and Kmart) are actually a food destination for I-88!

Rating: 10 out of 10.
The pictures tell you why.

In Danger of Closing?:
Sadly, it's a possibility. This store is one of NY's two REIT Kmart stores meaning it could either shrink or close altogether. I don't see this store closing as it seems profitable and is kept up well. It also seems unlikely any other company would want to come in and open a store here since this is rather small town, but you never know.

  1. I'm sure I said it before when you posted these pictures to flickr, but this is definitely a nice-looking store! (And yes, you fooled me XD ) I maintain that this is my favorite modern Kmart décor package (I have a different favorite Super Kmart one). That link at the top of the post is neat, also. It's cool to see a Mississippi Kmart got this package, even though it's since closed and to be honest I didn't even know one existed there anyway (nor had I frankly heard of the town...) :P Judging from the paint colors on the walls, I wonder if the Greenville, MS, store I posted pictures of to flickr last summer started to get this remodel only to be cut off midway through it.

    1. Page breaking is an awesome tool. :D

The color scheme is fine, but I kind of wish it was just red for Kmart. I'm not complaining though as just getting a remodel would be hard enough. Judging by pictures I've seen from different Flickr users, it would appear that some stores did at least start to get this package.

  2. Nice-looking store! I would have loved to have seen the decor package used more widely. Also doubly neat to see the auto center in use

    1. Yeah, remodels like this would of helped them greatly.

  4. That motif (along with the orange/beige/brown one) went by the wayside fairly quickly. I think they figured it was just cheaper to keep the white-painted walls and switch out the signage with the red ones which were what was standard for remodels for quite a few years.

    1. Yeah I can't imagine these remodels being cheap.

  5. Had to go from Binghamton to Albany last weekend so I made a point to stop by. Was moderately busy on a Saturday afternoon. No Wal-mart (or much of anything else really) close to it probably helps it keep going.

    1. Cool to hear. I know it seems to do rather well and it makes sense given no immediate competition.

  6. This Kmart is still going strong. We live in the Binghamton area but since we no longer have Kmart or Sears we do take the drive 3-4 times a years to hit this Kmart, especially since Cortland closed. Every time they release a closing list i always fear this will make the list because it’s seemingly in the middle of nowhere but I think the lack of competition helps. This store is generally clean, organized and well stocked.

  7. It is going strong indeed which is kind of surprising given that that the next closest location is Mattydale, a suburb of Syracuse. 90s stores like this are usually the better ones, but it helps that this store got a complete remodel in 2007/2008. A Fun fact is that this will be the only remaining Kmart store in upstate New York to feature a Little Caesars now that Wellsville, which is/was my local store, will be closing.

I enjoyed the Cortland store a lot. At least I managed to save two Kmart baskets from there.

  8. Fun fact: that "old" Kmart was #9526. The exterior style makes me think it opened sometime between 1978-1981.
