A New Modern Bon Ton

Even though Bon Ton may be in bankruptcy as we speak, they actually managed to open a new store just before bankruptcy was declared. And while this store was technically a relocation of an existing location, it still qualifies as new as was the idea. Bon Ton evidently does rather well here in Horseheads, NY for them to be willing to spend plenty of money to relocate and have a new modern store. The new store was previously a Macy's as seen below:

Flash forward a few months and new Bon Ton has opened:

The old Bon Ton at the same mall
Bon Ton has really a decent following in my region and does rather well. I for one, would hate to see them follow Toys R Us' footsteps. Bon Ton would also hurt many communities in Pennsylvania if they were to close as many are the only department store (not counting Walmart) left.

  1. Nice looking store! Do you know if they gutted the Macy's, or how much of the existing interior they kept and just altered?

Your sentence claiming Walmart as the only other department store besides Bon Ton in some areas really makes the situation stand out. It's not necessarily surprising to hear that these days... but still, that is an eye opener.

    1. I have no idea what they kept (if anything) from Macy's. If I had to guess though, they appeared to have used a similar setup.

I guess I should probably rephrase that into Bon Ton being the only proper department store in some areas. Walmart falls more into the discount store category along with so many others.

    2. Okay. Gotcha.

No need to rephrase, I understood what you meant :) That it's even come to the point where Walmart has become the de facto department store in some areas is what's shocking.

    3. Perhaps you can understand now why I don't care for shopping online for the most part.

    4. Agreed. I don't do any online shopping myself. My family does, but in general it's only for items we can't find elsewhere in physical stores... or items that are cheaper online. Which brings up another good point: l_dawg and I were talking this week and he said that recently an in-store Walmart price was much higher than the online Walmart price. It's this sort of thing that's driving people to shop online instead of in physical stores. I'm not saying online shopping is fully to blame for all the issues plaguing the retail industry right now, as chain mismanagement is definitely up there as well... but it is absolutely a contributing factor to some degree, no doubt.

    5. Same idea here. Since bigger LEGO sets aren't carried by normal retailers, I will buy them online since you can't in store. LEGO-related products and the occasional computer game are the only things I've purchased online.

While I'm sure Walmart would no doubt price match that price, I can understand why customers may have issues with the store. Sometimes the store may not have updated the price or hasn't been made aware of the price match.

Toys R Us is a prime example chain mismanagement. Loading a company down with debt is never a good idea unless you're Eddie Lampert.

    6. You're right, Walmart did price match it for him. However - and I'm being cynical here, but still - I don't doubt that the price was higher on purpose. And on a similar note, I hate that Walmart has gotten rid of price match entirely. Seems like the only thing they'll match these days is their own online price - which, of course, is something that ought to be the same in the first place...

LOL! Speaking of which, I thought you might find this article interesting if you haven't seen it yet: https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/03/the-strange-odyssey-of-hedge-fund-king-eddie-lampert-sears-kmart

    7. Are you just looking to be mad at Walmart? lol

I did see the article mentioned on Dead and Dying Retail's Facebook page. Definitely some eye-raising comments in there.

    8. LOL! Nah. Sorry if it came across that way. "I'm not mad, just disappointed" XD

      I thought so as well.
