Former Kmart #4054

NOTE: This post comes from outside the blog's coverage area.

As a store closure apart of the initial 2018 bankruptcy wave, the 54th Kmart store in the chain managed to reach 55 years before it would close it doors. I felt this location did rather well and proof of that is that this store did extraordinarily well in its garden shop. Although it was old, it felt cared for and maintained when I visited. My only negative comment would the misplacement of the 'home organization' department sign.

I'm sure most of you are aware by now that TransformCo. (the company that now operates Sears & Kmart as of after the bankruptcy) has announced plans to close even more stores. While some stores on this list do make sense, there are many profitable locations that have been chosen to close and personally I don't see the company surviving long-term after seeing this list. With this latest list, all of the remaining NY state Kmart stores IN THE BLOG'S COVERAGE AREA are scheduled to close. Only 4 stores (Berwick, Edwardsville/Kingston, Williamsport and Wilkes-Barre) will remain for the moment in the entire coverage zone.

  1. What a nice story at that link. It's always cool when a store has been around that long and has such loyal employees. Even though the store is now closed, I'm sure there are lots of great memories of the place that survive.

    1. That's what was nice about the Kmart chain. It seems a lot of stores had very loyal employees. Memories are always nice too!

  2. Sidney, NY seems to be about the only New York location that will be left, outside of maybe the NYC area.

As usual no rhyme or reason to what they're closing.

    1. Sidney is just of 8 or 9 Kmart stores left in NY state, but it is indeed going to be the last upstate NY location likely thanks to being a Seritage store that no one else is interested in.

There are some in the list that make sense as they present logistical challenges, but yeah a good chunk of these there really is no justifiable reason.

    2. IIRC (maybe I even read it here) but Sidney the store moved (just a few hundred yards) and the old store location is still vacant. It has no particularly close competition and the one time I was in it it was rather busy.
