A Soon to Be Stopped Tops

As fate would have it, the timing of recent announcement that 12 Tops locations will be sold off to C&S Wholesale Grocers worked out in my favor. I had already planned to be traveling through Cortland this past weekend, so a quick stop into the Cortland Tops was able to occur. Cortland is among the larger of the 12 locations that will soon be rebranded into a revived Grand Union.

This location was built as a Tops, so it has the standard Tops layout of the era. Let's take a look:

It'll be interesting to see what changes Grand Union makes, if any....

  1. Fortuitous timing! I agree, I'm interested to see if any changes come from this.

    1. Yeah the announcement couldn't have been at a better time.

  2. Kind of ironic you called it "Stopped", since the place used to have ex-Stop & Shop shopping carts. It appears they replaced the carts since I visited last year.

    1. So I saw over on your post. That is quite ironic.

  3. Across the street from here, Action Auto was once a Lums restaurant. Before 281 was made 4 lanes up to the Cortland city line, there had been a former Mr. Donut on the north side of Rt. 222.

I wonder if the Tops is a relocation from what's now a Val-U hardware around the corner.

Cortland has a lot of strange things. One of if not the last P&C stores. A Burger King that doesn't serve breakfast - and has the sandwich line right in front of you where you can watch like in a Subway. The only A&W around since they split from YUM! Brands. That tiny JC Penney. Walgreens in a brick Eckerd. A tiny drive-through coffee house in what probably was a gas station. You could probably spend a couple days checking out all the retail things there.

    1. Wasn't aware of that special Burger King and a few other things that you mentioned. Interesting to hear about them. If I haven't already posted here, I have pictures of the dinky JCPenney, that P&C and the A&W over on my Flickr.

As for Tops having an older location, I kind of find it unlikely as this quite far away from their home area.
