Moving westward now, we find ourselves moving into the Rochester, NY market for our Kmart tours. We first start in Victor at what would technically be the newest store in the area. This store in Victor was actually a 1990s relocation of a Kmart that served as an anchor to the Perinton Square Mall. The former Kmart had been converted to become a Tops supermarket that we toured in its final weeks of operation.
This newer store of course was able to offer the bells and whistles that came with new build 90s location including a Little Caesars and a pharmacy. It also had a PENSKE auto center that would actually be sublet to a rug store. While the pharmacy would wind up closing before the store did, This location, however, would be among the few to actually see some salesfloor space be leased out to Scrubology within the store during the Sears Holdings days. Little Caesars managed to operate right up until the store closed its doors in 2017. The store has been partly reused by Hobby Lobby.
Nice looking store! The Scrubology looks really neat and I love how the rug store used the former garage doors as windows to display rugs in. Is the rug store still there, or did it close also?
ReplyDeleteThe rug store pulled out as well.
ReplyDeleteThe rug store rolled up shop?
ReplyDeleteI was in this store many times and it always was pretty nice. It was another of the larger stores.
What was odd in here was there was sort of a hole in the front (picture 38 I think) that was always clearance stuff, but seemed like it was meant for some other use originally.
Yep, the space the rug shop occupied (the old auto center), was actually demolished to make way for Hobby Lobby. Last I knew, the rug shop relocated across the street to Eastview Mall.
DeleteI'm not 100% certain, but I'm thinking that space may have been a video rental area at one point.
Thanks for this article, it brings back so many memories. I remember when this location opened up in the 90s and it seemed so exciting, I would go there all the time with my parents and do our shopping there. I remember the right side of the electronics section were all videogames and there were some demo kiosks that I would just spend hours at while my parents finished their shopping. We'd then go to the Little Ceasars and eat there.
ReplyDeleteThe location just kept surviving even with the Target and Walmart nearby as competition, every time when Kmart announced closures I would look at the list and it would survive another year until the time finally came, although by then the store was a sad shell of what it used to be.
You are very much welcome. I'm glad this gave you pleasant memories.
DeleteWalmart arrived in Victor pretty late, which may have helped this location to last a bit longer.
