NOTE: This post comes from Monroe County, PA. Just outside of the Twin Tiers coverage map.
In June of this year, I had the opportunity to visit the sprawling cities of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre which traverse the Wyoming Valley in Northeast PA for over 20 miles. I really liked the terrain of the area, but since this is a site about retail, lets get to it!
Although Mt. Ponoco is NOT in the coverage area for the Twin Tiers Blog, it is was close enough for me to venture out there to visit the store's liquidation sale when I was visiting northeastern Pennsylvania. So without further delay, these pictures were taken on the first Saturday in June.

One of the few non-Big Kmarts it seems, and pretty emptied out, too. Interesting seeing the correlating treatment for the fitting rooms and layaway (that is, the non Big K versions), and how they just haphazardly stuck the current layway sign over the old letters on the wall :P
ReplyDeleteDespite their being signage saying otherwise, 'Big K' does not exist anymore. That is why a lot of stores dropped the big portion of the name. I know it can get confusing, but that's Kmart for you! I'm very seriously thinking about doing a couple posts about Kmart decor and such. Kind of like what you did for Kroger.
DeleteThere really is no consistency with fitting rooms, pharmacy and layaway signage at older stores which have not been remodeled. Some have the plain word style you see above, some have a triangle design while others may have a curve-ball with no updates by having older decor such as the layaway signage that PlazaACME on Flickr took a picture of at the Exton store.
I agree - a lot of confusion and inconsistency!
DeleteThat Kmart décor posts idea sounds really cool, I'd love to see that! :)
RIP Mt. Pocono Kmart.
ReplyDeleteThe exterior of this store always looked really strange to me, probably because it wasn't a common Kmart building design. However, I'm pretty sure this building was always a Kmart from the beginning, I think one of the first 90's style prototype stores they built.
Most likely it was an early prototype with the odd square entrance because it had a basic '90s layout to it.
DeleteShopped there with my mom when I was a little kid in the year 2002.

DeleteAt least you will have those memories to remember the store by. It is or has already been replaced by Petco and Planet Fitness.
