Moving westward to tour our next Kmart, we come to Herkimer, NY. At the time of my visit, this location was defintely seeing signs of neglect such as a leaking roof. At one time, this location had a cafe and pharmacy. The cafe had actually been walled off, implying it had been closed for a while. But in a weird twist, it was actually being removed. A notable difference from most other stores is the garden center jutting out into the parking lot. To my knowledge, this location is now vacant.
As far as its current status goes, only the parking lot was redeveloped - a WellNow Urgent Care and T-mobile cell phone store were built in the lot, with a nearby State Farm insurance agency building being demolished for these new buildings. The Kmart building itself is not part of the redevelopment and remains empty.
ReplyDeleteAh, so an outparcel did occur. Given the building was in rough shape when Kmart did operate here, have to figure that it will take a lot of work to repair or reuse it.
DeleteAnd as of this writing, a third outparcel is being built. With pretty much the entire parking lot lost to redevelopment, I'd say demolition is probably the best option for this worthless Kmart building at this point.
DeleteYeah, probably be for the best to demolish it.
DeleteThis store was smaller than other K-marts. I only went in it a few times.
ReplyDeleteI did pass by in early December and it was vacant then.
Believe it or not, this store is actually about the average size for a Kmart.
