Bluelight News Flash: Another Massive Closure List (Updated)

Once again another massive list for closures for Sears and Kmart has been announced. Some of these stores I had actually planned on possibly visiting in the future.1 Some of these stores I had no intention on visiting, but I may change my plans to check them out.

Although my local stores are safe, I'm very saddened to wake up to this news this morning.

Footnotes:
1. Final Green & Grey prototype store.
2. Supercenter location.
3. This is, soon to be was, the oldest operating Sears store in the chain. This store's auto center, which      is separate from the store, will still continue to operate despite the store closing.

  1. Sad (but of course inevitable) to see some of the final supercenters go. Around me, the Memphis Kmart apparently is staying open once more, as well as the local Sears locations; however, AFB and l_dawg told me the Corinth, MS, Kmart is closing, leaving only three in the state. AFB also said that with this move Sears Holdings will be exiting some states entirely. Not unexpected, though...

    1. Kmart will be close to exiting some states now, but not entirely with this wave. However, they will be leaving certain large cities entirely (Mobile, AL for example). I just had to clear that up.

    3. Whoops! I read your flickrmail early in the morning and must have confused that. Sorry!

    4. is it confirmed they will exit some states? I MEAN all Kmart does is downsize, why even some that updated their logo?

    5. No, Kmart has not yet abandoned any of the lower 48 states. They still operate at least one location in a given state other than Alaska. We were just discussing how the entire state of Mississippi now will only have three operational locations.

  2. It's not the closings that surprise me, but the fact that Sears Holdings released 78 stores at once yesterday (kind of going back to the old days of mass closings and media frenzy, something I thought Sears Holdings wanted to avoid by closing stores a few at a time). It won't be long now before those last two Super Kmarts go. I figured 2016 would be Super Kmart's last year, and I feel even more confident about that now that there will be only two remaining after this. I may try to visit the South Jacksonville Kmart on San Jose, but that will probably be the only casualty I'll be able to cover if all goes as planned.

  3. I'm surprised that out of this entire list, only two locations are closing in the Twin Tiers coverage area and they are both in the suburbs of Rochester! These particular locations I'm not surprised to see closing as one is at a dead mall and the other was one I probably would of closed myself if given the choice!

I was planning on visiting Uniontown this summer since it was a KFresh store. Now I'm a little disappointed I won't be able to see one! I'm probably still going to check it out as I was planning to go in June.

If I get to the Rochester locations, it will be toward the end of the sale in July.

  4. I forgot to mention it, but the Tewksberry, MA was the store where the one movie (I think it was Grown Ups) was shot at.

  5. I recognized the Irondequoit Sears from your post a while back. That one makes sense, and I'm surprised that store lasted until now in that dead mall. The Eaton, OH store that was rumored to be closing last winter has also now made the list as well. I didn't know that about the Tewksbury store either. Grown Ups was the movie that Kmart sponsored a few years ago, so that was probably it. I've never seen it though.

If I go up to Jacksonville, it will actually be in two weeks before the closing even begins (that's just how the dates work out for me). Even though you might not get to see the KFresh part of the Uniontown store by June, at least you might be able to document its closure.

    1. I'm still plan to visit Uniontown anyways, it just won't have the same feel. I was really hoping to see K-fresh in operation. That's why I'm mainly disappointed.
